Welcome back to Slurp & Stream! Did you all catch my previous review of the “Returned Custard Sesame Bread” that completely captivated my taste buds with its insane chewiness?
Today, I’m bringing you a review of its brand-new sibling: the “Returned Chewy Chocolate Sesame Bread” (Kkaechalbang). Can this chocolate variation surpass the absolute emotional high of the custard flavor? Let’s dive straight in and find out!
When you tear open the packaging, you are greeted by a very rustic, brown-tinted, unpolished-looking bun. It definitely doesn’t have the flashy aesthetic of a high-end bakery dessert, but if you know Korean convenience store treats, you already know that the real charm of this bread lies hidden inside. 😎
Splitting it in half, it absolutely does not disappoint on the texture front! The jjolgit (a uniquely Korean term for a bouncy, tapioca-like chewiness) elasticity is almost identical to the stellar custard version.
Inside that chewy shell sits a generous amount of distinctly sweet chocolate cream. I ate the bread entirely on its own without any milk or coffee, and the harmony between the fun, bouncy texture and the sweet chocolate was actually quite pleasant.
Now, for the most important part—the brutally honest evaluation. The flavor combination itself was good, but… to be completely transparent, it left me feeling a little underwhelmed compared to the custard flavor. 😢
The price is 2,500 KRW (roughly $1.90 USD). After finishing the chocolate one, I found myself thinking, “Hmm… would I spend my own money to buy this specific flavor again?” In terms of value for money, it makes me tilt my head a bit.
Therefore, the ultimate winner in my heart is the Custard flavor by an absolute landslide! The custard version just hits my personal sweet spot perfectly.
