Welcome back to Slurp & Stream! Today, I’m bringing you a review of a treat that immediately caught my eye in the convenience store dessert aisle: the “Returned Custard Sesame Bread” (Kkaechalbang).
Is it just a hype, or is it actually good? Let’s get right into it!
When I first tore open the packaging, my initial thought was, “Oh, it’s about the size of my fist!” Because of its slightly rustic, unassuming appearance, I honestly didn’t have massive expectations at first. But let me tell you…
The true value of this bread reveals itself the moment you try to split it in half. I tried to pull it apart with my hands, and wow… the jjolgit (a uniquely Korean term for bouncy, tapioca-like chewiness) was so intense that it was genuinely difficult to tear it apart by hand!
After struggling (in a good way!) to get it open, I found the inside generously stuffed with a sweet, smooth, yet delightfully thick and rich custard cream. The moment you take a bite, the overwhelmingly chewy sesame bread and the sweet cream blend perfectly in your mouth. I ate the bread entirely on its own without a drink, and it wasn’t dry at all; the harmony was absolutely flawless.
The price is 2,500 KRW (roughly $1.90 USD). To be brutally honest, it does feel slightly expensive for the actual portion size. 😢
If the price tag were just a tiny bit friendlier, this would easily become my daily “Holy Grail” item that I’d buy every single morning. However, due to the slight pressure of the price, I think I’ll reserve it as a special treat for those days when I am intensely craving something chewy and sweet.
