Welcome back to Slurp & Stream! If there is one Korean instant noodle brand that absolutely everyone knows globally, it’s Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun. To celebrate its massive legacy, they recently dropped the “Shin Ramyun GOLD (40th Anniversary Edition).”
Priced at around 1,145 KRW (roughly $0.85 USD) per pack, I spotted this shiny, gold-wrapped package at the mart and immediately tossed it into my cart. Does the taste actually live up to the majestic “Gold” title? Here is my 100% honest review!
The moment I saw it on the supermarket shelf, the flashy, gold-covered packaging completely stole my attention. It definitely radiates the majesty and prestige you would expect from a 40th-anniversary special edition. Visually, it feels like a premium upgrade!
Let’s cut to the chase. The aroma and the overall taste aren’t drastically different from the “standard” ramen we all know and love. In fact, that signature, aggressively spicy punch of the original Shin Ramyun is actually toned down here.
The biggest plot twist? The flavor profile has a very distinct, gentle, and savory taste—exactly like when you crack a fresh egg into your boiling ramen! As you sip the broth, you actually chew on tiny, freeze-dried egg flakes. It quite literally just tastes like a slightly milder Shin Ramyun with an egg already mixed in.
When I took my very first sip of the broth, a sudden kick of spice hit the back of my throat, making me think, “Oh? This is surprisingly spicy!” However, as you keep eating, your tongue quickly adapts, and the spice level settles down to be very comparable (if not slightly milder) than the original Shin Ramyun. As for the noodles, the bouncy, chewy texture is exactly the reliable, standard quality you always get from Nongshim.
The true value of this ramen is unlocked when you pair it with Kimchi. Because the broth is slightly milder and less aggressive than the original, the flavor synergy explodes when you introduce the crunchy, tangy, and spicy kick of fermented Kimchi.
If you take one bite of the ramen followed by one bite of Kimchi, you will experience the magic of an infinite eating loop where you simply cannot put your chopsticks down!
At the end of the day, it’s Shin Ramyun, so it is undeniably delicious. However, compared to the grandiose “40th Anniversary Gold” title and the flashy packaging, the actual flavor is just a very ordinary “Shin Ramyun with an egg in it.” I recommend this if: * You find the original Shin Ramyun slightly too spicy or salty.
