When I first saw the CU Big Sam Suhyangmi Bulgogi Triangle Rice Ball, its size looked reasonable for a quick and simple meal.
At 2,100 KRW, I expected it to contain a decent amount of filling, especially since it was marketed as a big rice ball with bulgogi inside.
I heated it in the microwave before eating.
The rice had a perfectly acceptable texture. It wasn’t too hard or dry, and I had no trouble eating it. However, I couldn’t really notice the distinctive qualities of Suhyangmi rice, which is part of the product’s name.
If you’re expecting a noticeable aroma or nutty flavor from the rice, you might be a little disappointed. This was one of the biggest letdowns for me.
The bulgogi itself wasn’t bad.
It had a soy sauce-based flavor, and the meat had an acceptable texture. It wasn’t especially tender, but it wasn’t tough or difficult to chew either.
In fact, the bulgogi was easily the tastiest part of the rice ball.
The problem, however, was the amount of filling.
There was less bulgogi than I expected.
Compared with the amount of rice, the meat filling felt rather insufficient. At first, eating the rice and bulgogi together was enjoyable enough. But as I continued, I started feeling like I was eating mostly plain rice.
The soy sauce seasoning on the bulgogi was decent, but because there wasn’t enough meat, the rice on its own tasted a little bland.
In the end, the rice took up too much of the experience, while the filling that was supposed to make this product special felt limited.
At 2,100 KRW, this rice ball left me somewhat disappointed.
The bulgogi tasted fine, and the rice was perfectly edible, but the amount of meat was simply too small compared with the rice. I also couldn’t really appreciate the distinctive character of Suhyangmi rice.
For me, the biggest issue was the imbalance between rice and filling. I wouldn’t be particularly eager to buy it again at this price.
