Welcome back to Slurp & Stream!
Today, we’re checking out another Korean convenience store snack! This time, I picked up the Sweet Potato, Ham & Cheese Sandwich from CU, one of South Korea’s most popular convenience store chains.
Priced at 3,600 KRW (roughly $2.50–$2.70 USD, depending on the exchange rate), this sandwich combines the natural sweetness of sweet potato with savory ham and cheese.
It’s an interesting combination that sounds pretty promising on paper. But does it actually taste as good as it sounds? Let’s dig in!
At first glance, there wasn’t anything particularly eye-catching about this sandwich. The size was reasonable, and its appearance was pretty much what you’d expect from a typical pre-packaged sandwich.
Nothing fancy or visually impressive here!
Still, the combination of sweet potato, ham, and cheese caught my attention. Sweet potato is a popular ingredient in Korean snacks and desserts, so I was curious to see how its sweetness would work with the salty, savory flavors of ham and cheese.
Would this unusual combination actually work?
Let’s start with the bread.
Honestly, there wasn’t anything particularly impressive about it. The texture was pretty standard—neither too dry nor especially soft or fluffy.
It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t something I’d specifically praise either.
The good news is that the bread didn’t overpower the filling or ruin the overall combination. It simply did its job as a sandwich base.
The sweet potato was probably the ingredient I was most curious about.
Was there a generous amount of filling? Not really. It wasn’t overflowing with sweet potato, but there was enough to clearly notice its presence while eating.
As for the flavor, it had a pleasant, natural sweetness that gave the sandwich its unique character.
The sweet potato added a mild dessert-like sweetness that made this sandwich different from your typical ham and cheese sandwich.
However, if you’re buying this specifically because you’re a huge sweet potato fan, you might wish there were a little more of it!
The ham and cheese portions were both reasonable.
The ham tasted good, and the cheese blended naturally with the other ingredients. Neither ingredient particularly stood out on its own, but they both played their part.
What made this combination work was the contrast between the sweet potato’s sweetness and the savory flavors of ham and cheese.
It wasn’t an incredibly exciting flavor combination, but surprisingly, everything worked together pretty well.
Nothing tasted out of place, and that’s a good thing!
I ate this sandwich straight out of the package without heating it up.
The overall flavor was pretty straightforward and enjoyable enough.
You get the sweetness of the sweet potato, the savory taste of the ham, and the mild richness of the cheese. Together, they create a fairly balanced sweet-and-savory combination.
None of the individual ingredients delivered an incredible flavor experience, but the way they worked together was definitely a positive.
That said, don’t expect an explosion of flavor. If you’re looking for something bold, exciting, or packed with intense seasoning, this sandwich might feel a little underwhelming.
It’s more of a simple, easygoing snack than a memorable food experience.
So, what’s the final verdict?
The CU Sweet Potato, Ham & Cheese Sandwich isn’t a terrible product by any means. In fact, the combination of sweet potato, ham, and cheese works better than I initially expected.
However, the bread is ordinary, the fillings aren’t particularly generous, and the overall taste doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
At 3,600 KRW, I was hoping for something a little more memorable.
I recommend this if:
The CU Sweet Potato, Ham & Cheese Sandwich is a perfectly decent convenience store snack.
The sweetness of the sweet potato works nicely with the savory ham and cheese, making the overall combination surprisingly pleasant.
However, it’s not particularly outstanding, and I wouldn’t call it a must-try K-Food item.
Would I buy it again? Maybe, if I were in the mood for this particular combination. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to find it.
Sometimes, a sandwich can be perfectly fine without being particularly memorable. And that’s exactly what this one is!
