Honest Review- GS25 Light Tuna Mayo Rice Ball – The Real Reason It’s Low Calorie?! 🤔

Welcome back to C-Store Eats! While browsing the triangle kimbap section at the convenience store, a massive bold claim on the packaging completely stopped me in my tracks: “40% Less Fat.” Compared to your standard Korean triangle kimbap (Samgak Kimbap), the calorie count on this one was noticeably lower. The moment I saw it, I thought, “Wow, we can finally enjoy convenient rice balls as a light, guilt-free diet snack!” Filled with high expectations, I immediately tossed it into my basket and headed to the counter.

Priced at just 1,300 KRW (roughly $0.95 USD), let’s see if this “light” version actually delivers on taste. Here is my 100% honest review!

✨ First Impressions: The Healthy Diet Illusion

The packaging definitely does a great job of marketing itself to health-conscious snackers. In Korea, Tuna Mayo is the undisputed king of triangle kimbap flavors, but it’s usually packed with heavy mayonnaise. Seeing a “Light” version felt like a breath of fresh air. Visually, it looks exactly like the classic, reliable seaweed-wrapped triangle we all know and love, promising a guilt-free bite.

🍙 Taste & Texture: Well-Seasoned Rice, But… Where is the Tuna?

With high hopes, I took my very first bite. Here is how the flavor and texture profile actually breaks down:

  • Perfectly Seasoned Rice: I have to give credit where it’s due—the rice itself is seasoned beautifully. It has a subtle, savory base flavor, meaning the rice alone doesn’t taste bland or dry. It goes down quite smoothly.
  • The “Where is it?” Filling: The real disappointment came when I finally reached the center where the glorious tuna mayo topping was supposed to live. To be completely blunt, the filling felt incredibly scarce. It didn’t feel like they cleanly reduced the heavy mayo to make it healthier; rather, it felt like they just put less tuna mayo in it altogether.

💸 Value for Money: Did I Find the Secret to the Low Calories?

When compared directly to a standard, full-fat Tuna Mayo kimbap, the overall size, weight, and amount of rice are exactly the same.

However, because the core identity of the product—the actual tuna mayo filling—is so visibly lacking, a very logical suspicion popped into my head: “Wait… is this low in calories not because of some innovative low-fat mayo recipe, but simply because they skimped on the filling?” It makes you chuckle a bit, but from a value-for-money perspective, it leaves a slightly bitter taste in your mouth.

💡 Final Verdict: Great for a Light Bite, Risky for Tuna Lovers

Thanks to the well-seasoned rice, you won’t need to chug a drink while eating this. However, if you are someone who buys Tuna Mayo kimbap specifically for that rich, creamy, and deeply savory explosion of tuna and mayonnaise, this product definitely carries some risk.

I recommend this if:

  • You are strictly counting calories and want a quick, low-fat carbohydrate source.
  • You prefer a cleaner, less greasy, and more subtle flavor profile.

Skip this if:

  • You want that authentic, rich, and bursting-heavy flavor of classic Korean Tuna Mayo.

At the end of the day, it’s a decent, affordable snack to tie you over, but it might leave true Tuna Mayo fans feeling a little empty inside. If you want a super light bite on the go, check it out at your nearest GS25!
