Welcome back to C-Store Eats! While searching for a quick bite at the convenience store, a highly intriguing flavor lineup completely stopped me in my tracks: “Perilla Oil + Muted (Aged) Kimchi + Tuna Mayo.” This felt like a massive upgrade from your standard, everyday kimbap flavors. Plus, when I picked it up, it felt surprisingly hefty and heavy in my hand. Naturally, I got super excited thinking, “Wow, this new release must be absolutely bursting with fillings!” Priced at 1,700 KRW (roughly $1.25 USD), let’s find out if this heavy giant lives up to the hype. Here is my 100% honest review!
For those who don’t know, Muted Kimchi (Mugeonji) is fully fermented, deeply sour Korean kimchi, and when paired with fragrant, nutty perilla oil, it creates an iconic Korean comfort food combination. Seeing this gourmet concept wrapped inside a convenience store triangle kimbap felt incredibly premium. I couldn’t wait to tear it open and dive in.
With massive expectations, I took a huge first bite. However… the excitement quickly faded. Here is the breakdown:
Following my recent review of the Light Tuna Mayo, I faced yet another disappointing vanishing act. The fillings inside this massive kimbap were heartbreakingly scarce.
As it turns out, the reason this triangle kimbap felt so wonderfully heavy and thick in my hand wasn’t because it was packed with delicious toppings… it was just a massive, dense block of plain white rice. From a budget perspective, the pure volume of food you get for the price is decent, but the lack of actual flavor makes it a tough pill to swallow.
Because the fillings are so overwhelmingly sparse, you will find yourself eating plain, dry white rice for the majority of the time. If you do decide to pick this up, eating it solo is highly risky.
The ultimate pro-tip? You absolutely must pair this with a spicy, piping hot cup of Korean instant noodles. The best way to enjoy it is to use the heavy, leftover plain rice to soak up the fiery, flavorful ramen broth at the very end!
If you’re looking for a rich, gourmet flavor explosion of authentic Korean kimchi and perilla oil, this one might leave you hanging. But if you just need a heavy, cheap carb fix to pair with your favorite spicy ramen, grab one at GS25!
