Welcome back to C-Store Eats! In Korea, when something is labeled “Hyeja-roun” (혜자로운), it means it offers mind-blowing value for your money. Today, we are testing GS25’s “Hyeja-roun” Cream Stick Bread.
While most premium convenience store cream buns in Korea now cost well over 2,500 to 3,000 KRW, this long stick pastry sits at a beautiful price of just 1,500 KRW (roughly $1.10 USD). Does this budget snack deliver true happiness, or is it just cheap? Here is my 100% honest review!
At just 1,500 KRW, the price point immediately lives up to the legendary “Hyeja” value title. However, before tearing the plastic open, holding it didn’t give me that “Wow, this is heavy!” feeling. It felt like a pretty standard, average-sized cream stick pastry you could find anywhere.
When I peeled open the bread to check the inside, the visuals completely blew past my expectations. Usually, budget-friendly pastries cut corners on the filling, but this one was packed with a very generous amount of white cream from end to end. For just $1.10, the cream-to-bread ratio is honestly impressive. Purely in terms of volume, it easily gets a passing grade.
Unfortunately, a pastry cannot survive on volume alone—the ultimate test is always flavor and texture. And that is exactly where this snack hits a wall.
As I took a few bites, the flaws became glaringly obvious:
Ultimately, while you get a massive amount of cream for the price, the quality of the taste falls below average. Halfway through, my palate felt so greasy that I desperately needed a drink to rescue my tastebuds.
If you ever decide to try this for the sheer value, a cup of hot, unsweetened black Americano or a clean, bitter herbal tea is absolutely mandatory to cut through the grease!
At the end of the day, it’s a budget-friendly snack that gives you maximum cream for minimum cash, but skips out on the premium texture. It’s a decent sweet fix if your wallet is completely empty, but don’t expect a gourmet bakery experience.
