Welcome back to C-Store Eats! Today, we are reviewing another drop from GS25’s ultra-budget lineup: the “Hyeja-roun” Strawberry Stick Bread.
Just like its older sibling, the Cream Stick Bread, this fruit-infused version comes in at a wonderfully cheap price of just 1,500 KRW (roughly $1.10 USD). In an era where bakery items are getting ridiculously expensive, this looks like a wallet-saving hero. But does it actually taste good, or is it just a cheap sugar bomb? Let’s find out!
At 1,500 KRW, the pricing is undeniably attractive and immediately relieves any buyer’s guilt. When you pick it up, it might not look like a gigantic monster pastry, but it definitely feels remarkably substantial and lengthy for a snack that costs barely over a dollar. In terms of sheer volume per dollar, it absolutely nails the “Hyeja” value title.
I gently pried the stick bread open to see what we were working with inside. While it wasn’t bursting at the seams with stuffing like the previous cream version, it contained a perfectly adequate, decent amount of pink strawberry jam and white cream sandwiched together. Considering the rock-bottom price, they definitely didn’t skimp on the filling.
Unfortunately, when it came down to the actual taste test, the chronic flaws of this budget lineup reared their ugly heads once again.
Trying to finish this giant stick dry without any liquid is a certified challenge. If you are going to brave this sugar bomb, a tall glass of ice-cold white milk or a strong, bitter black iced Americano is absolutely mandatory to save your palate.
At the end of the day, you get exactly what you pay for. It is a massive, dollar-menu sweet pastry designed to fill you up on a budget, but it sacrifices any gourmet flavor for intense, artificial sweetness.
