Welcome back to C-Store Eats! Today, we are diving into the health-conscious side of Korean convenience stores with GS25’s High-Protein, Low-Sugar “Chewy” Dark Chocolate Bread.
With fitness and guilt-free snacking booming globally, K-convenience stores have been dropping heaps of protein-packed treats. Priced at 2,500 KRW (roughly $1.85 USD), this little pastry boasts a “low-sugar” formula and a promisingly deep, dark chocolate visual. But can a diet-friendly convenience store bread actually taste like a real dessert? Let’s drop the truth bomb!
At 2,500 KRW, it sits on the pricier side considering its physical size. Diet and protein-focused bakery items usually cost a premium, but the moment I opened the package, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed by how tiny it actually was.
On the bright side, the packaging aggressively flaunts its “Low-Sugar” status, and the bread itself features a rich, deep cocoa color that looks incredibly decadent and appetizing.
The name explicitly promises a “Chewy Bread” (쫀득빵 - Jj쫀득빵, which usually implies a dense, mochi-like rice cake texture in Korea). If that’s what you’re hoping for, prepare your jaw for a disappointing reality check.
The sweetness factor also left a lot to be desired due to its healthy formulation.
Because it is a “low-sugar” product, the bread portion itself is almost entirely flavorless and lacks sweetness. Trying to choke down the bread on its own without any liquid is a genuine choking hazard.
The only saving grace is the thin layer of dark chocolate jam injected into the center. When you manage to get a bite with the jam, it actually delivers a lovely, rich sweetness that completely carries the dry bread.
However, the fatal flaw is that there is barely any jam inside. The ratio of sauce is way too small to save the giant, desert-dry pastry surrounding it, leaving you with a lingering sadness with every bite. Trying to finish this without a protein shake or milk to wash it down is a true survival challenge.
At the end of the day, this bread nailed the nutritional goals but completely missed the mark on execution. It’s too dry to be called “chewy” and too skimpy on the chocolate jam to satisfy a true sweet tooth. Skip this unless you are desperately trying to hit your macro goals on the go.
