Welcome back to Slurp & Stream! Today, I’m bringing you a review of a drink that immediately caught my eye at Mega Coffee: the Matcha Gelato Fondant Strawberry Frappe.
Let me cut straight to the chase: my rating for this is a highly satisfying 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you are a hardcore matcha fan, grab a seat, because this might just be your new favorite cafe run.
The moment I received this drink, I literally let out a “Wow!” The color palette is absolute art.
Right on top, there is a massive scoop of green matcha gelato. Right underneath that sits a vibrant, refreshing strawberry frappe, and resting at the very bottom is another layer of deep green matcha base. The harmony of the red and green layers is so visually pleasing that it puts you in a good mood before you even take a sip. It is practically begging to be posted on your Instagram story.
The part I was most curious about was the matcha gelato! Before mixing anything, I went straight in for a scoop.
The Gelato on its Own: It has that distinct matcha aroma, but it’s not aggressively bitter. It’s more of a pleasant, “Mmm, a nice hint of matcha” vibe. It’s a very crowd-pleasing flavor profile that won’t alienate casual matcha drinkers.
But the absolute showstopper was the texture. The dense, chewy, thick consistency that authentic gelato is known for is beautifully executed here! I honestly wasn’t expecting this level of gelato quality from a budget-friendly franchise like Mega Coffee.
The Mixed Experience: After tasting the gelato, I gave the whole drink a good mix with the strawberry shake. Wow, mixing it completely transforms the flavor profile! The subtle, bittersweet notes of the matcha blend flawlessly with the bright, fruity tartness of the strawberry.
A quick heads up: there are no actual strawberry chunks in the drink. If you are someone who strictly needs chewy fruit bits in your frappes, keep that in mind!
Because it’s topped with a giant scoop of gelato, I fully expected this to be a sugar bomb—but it surprisingly isn’t! The bitterness of the matcha does an incredible job of neutralizing the sweetness of the strawberry. It results in a perfectly balanced, “healthy-tasting” sweetness that even those who dislike overly sugary drinks can easily enjoy.
